Transforming a Narrow Lot: How We Revitalized a Fairhope Home’s Landscape
At Sexton Lawn & Landscape, we take pride in transforming even the most challenging spaces into beautiful, functional landscapes. One of our recent projects—a narrow lot in Fairhope, Alabama—presented a unique set of challenges. The homeowner wanted to not only restore a beloved Live Oak tree but also improve accessibility, parking, and the overall usability of their courtyard. Here’s how we took on these tasks and delivered a landscape that exceeded expectations.
Addressing the Live Oak’s Decline
The property’s centerpiece, a stunning Live Oak tree, was in trouble. Improper backfilling had suffocated the roots, leading to the tree’s decline. We teamed up with arborist Chris Francis to conduct an air-spading and root aeration process. This technique helped to loosen the soil around the roots, allowing for better air circulation and promoting the tree’s recovery. Now, the Live Oak not only thrives but has become a visually stunning focal point in the yard, thanks to our strategic restoration efforts.
Enhancing Accessibility with a Beautiful Walkway
The narrow lot didn’t offer much in terms of easy access, so we designed and installed a custom Belgard paver walkway. This walkway provides a seamless connection between the parking area and the front door, combining functionality with aesthetics. Homeowners and guests now have an elegant path that complements the rest of the property while offering smooth, practical access.
Solving Parking Limitations
Limited parking space was another major challenge on this small lot. To address this, we installed a custom limestone “Pull-Off” parking area. This solution not only provided additional parking but also allowed for permeability, meaning rainwater could drain naturally—an important factor in maintaining the health of the restored Live Oak tree.
Courtyard Transformation for Year-Round Enjoyment
The shaded courtyard had a persistent issue with poor drainage, often becoming muddy and unusable. To tackle this, we installed a comprehensive drainage and gutter system that effectively redirects water, keeping the courtyard dry and functional. For the ground covering, we used Pet Safe artificial turf, which is both low-maintenance and pet-friendly, making the courtyard a perfect place to relax or play with pets. This visually appealing solution created a space the homeowners can now enjoy year-round.
Strategic Planting for Year-Round Beauty
To complete the transformation, we selected and replanted landscape vegetation tailored to the conditions of the lot. We chose repeat-blooming plants that would offer continuous beauty throughout the year, adding color, texture, and life to the space. Our planting strategy not only enhanced the property’s curb appeal but also supported the overall health and ecological balance of the yard.
A Successful Transformation
This Fairhope home went from a challenging landscape to a shining example of what can be accomplished with the right approach. From tree restoration to enhancing functionality with thoughtful design and drainage solutions, we were able to turn a narrow, underutilized lot into a beautiful and functional space. The results speak for themselves:
“We are absolutely in love with the end result. The entire Sexton Landscape team was fantastic to work with. They expertly addressed all our concerns, such as transforming the courtyard space with artificial turf, saving our cherished tree, enhancing the front door’s accessibility and appeal, and adding year-round color and interest. The team’s efficiency and attention to detail were exceptional. We couldn’t be more pleased with every aspect of this project.” — Jourdan, Homeowner
